Calling CICS without a CTG using the resource adapter

Using the CICS resource adapter distributed with CICS Transaction Gateway is possible to connect directly to CICS Transaction Server.
This is true from the CTG 7.1 version using the IPIC connection to a CICS TS 3.2.

An IBM white paper (Integrating WebSphere Application Server and CICS using CICS Transaction Gateway) explain well this connectivity option

IPIC from distributed to zOS

As you can see the IPIC connection doesn’t need the CTG to launch CICS transactions (you always need the CTG license to download and use the resource adapter).

The connection configuration of the resource adapter is quite simple

Connection Factory IPIC configuration

You just have to set the “ConnectionURL” parameter as “local:” and the serverName has to be an URL like “tcp://<CICS_TS_hostname>:port”.

Previously the host team has to configure an IPCONN as described in this presentation (CICS TS V3.2 and CICS Transaction Gateway V7.1 IPIC functionality).

To verify the connection you can use the sample program EciB1 distributed with CTG

java <program> <CICS TG IP_address> <CICS TG port> java com.ibm.ctg.samples.eci.EciB1 9.20.216.75 2006

All the steps to verify the IPIC connection are described on this webcast (CICS Transaction Gateway V7 and
V7.1 Enhancements
).

The Education Assistant can help a lot to introduce this kind of connection (Introduction to IPIC)
