SEO and Websphere Commerce: remove context-path on home page

To increase SEO ranking, the traditional 301 (0 302) redirect from website root to the store URL (for example http://www.illyusa.com [301] o http://www.sonystyle.com [302]) could be a problem.

It’s quite simple to configure IHS with Redirect rules to hide context-path on a WC home page like on http://www.rosettagear.com/ (very good implemented the SEO strategy here).

If you want to test it in your WCD 7 (Websphere Commerce Developer) environment just configure the IHS (Configuring the IBM HTTP Server to work with WebSphere Commerce Developer) adding these lines

<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName *
Alias /wcsstore “C:\IBM\WCDE_ENT70\workspace\Stores\WebContent”
Alias /wcs “C:\IBM\WCDE_ENT70\workspace\CommerceAccelerator\WebContent”
# Example: Turn on the rewrite engine.
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^<yourHostName>$
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^(/)?$
RewriteRule ^(/)?$ /webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/TopCategories_10051_10051 [PT,NC]

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^(/)?$
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/webapp.*$
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/wcsstore.*$
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/wps.*$
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/images/.*$
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/favicon\.ico

RewriteRule ^/(.*)$      /webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/$1 [PT,NC]
</VirtualHost>

With these changes, you’ll see the Madisons’s home without context path on your WCD + IHS

Madisons Home Page no context path

    pity that this is only the tip of the iceberg, as all the links pages are longish, with the aggravating circumstance that in this way you have the horsepower that can be reached terms are multiple addresses (the long and short) with a significant degradation of the same ranking ….. think people think before making the first step to get to the bottom of the iceberg does it take to develop a step or configurazion more ….. how dynamically rewrite the page ….

      Hi Mr. Portal, thanks for your comment.
      Can you explain better why this change can bring a significant degradation?

    Hello,
    this is an interesting article.
    But I think that urlrewriting on webserver side is not the only solution used to have this type of url in http://www.rosettagear.com
    You probably have to customize the seourlmapper.xml file ?
    what is the solution to have in the url “nikegolf-nike-r-tech-sport-golf-bag-16507” when the name of the product is “NikeGolf Nike (R) Tech Sport Golf Bag” ?
    I’m trying to do the same on my commerce 7 site and I don’t know how to do …
    Could you help me ?
    Thank you
